Changing the way we treat mental health.

Changing the way we treat mental health.

The Functional Health Paradigm, as an Example Functional Medicine recognizes that the body is made up of a number of tiny processes that relate to larger biological functions, and that all of these are influenced by genetic and environmental factors. When these factors become imbalanced, they lead to symptoms, which develop into diseases if effective interventions are not applied. When these imbalances of function are addressed in a way that restores optimum function of the organism as a whole, health improves and symptoms disappear. Functional Medicine uses a systems-oriented approach to address the underlying causes of disease while the patient and practitioner work together in a therapeutic partnership. As an evolution of 21st century medicine, it shifts the classic disease-focused approach to a more patient-centered approach. Functional Medicine treats people, not symptoms. The patient’s history, genetics, environment and lifestyle all play a role in both health and complex disease in a Functional approach. As such, it seeks to support the unique expression of health or disease in each individual. While Functional Medicine is pioneering a new evolution in health care, Psychology remains preoccupied with establishing itself as a legitimate, albeit parallel, field on par with traditional allopathic medicine. To prove itself, it organized around a cluster of discrete disorders and set out to demonstrate its capacity to “cure” symptoms of mental health disturbance. The unintended consequence of this mimicry is that the mind is seen as a system that is separate from the body. Whereas Functional Medicine understands the origins, prevention, and treatment of complex disease, Psychology remains organized around discrete sets of behaviors, masking symptoms rather than learning...
Understanding Animal-Assisted Therapy

Understanding Animal-Assisted Therapy

Nature is our best teacher, and our best healer. Animals are able to calm us and to lift our spirits in ways conventional methods cannot. They love unconditionally, and have an instinctive capacity to identify when we are in need of assistance. They have been shown to reduce blood pressure, to ground emotions, and can soften the physiological effects of difficult traumatic restoration. Animal-Assisted Therapy is not for everyone. If you have concerns about working with animals, please let us know and we will be happy to accommodate...

Understanding Art Therapy

At some point in history, “art” became something that hangs on a wall. What society at large (and its planners) don’t realize, is that making art, in all its forms, is a natural language. As natural as our capacity to speak. When we relegated it to the wall, we hung up our freedom. We marginalized our creative children. And we diluted the glue that holds our families and communities together. We cut off the side of our brains necessary for mediating our mind’s relationship to our bodies, leaving ourselves as perceptual cripples, traumatized at every turn. Making art is not a leisure passtime. It’s part of who we are. It’s wired into our bodies. We can’t access it by talking. We access it by doing. Though classed as an “alternative” healing method, in my experience and those around the world, it is among the PREMIER ways to heal… body, soul, spirit, and tribe. There are some things words just cannot touch. Art can touch the heart. Art Therapy is incredibly powerful. It should not be done by untrained professional. Visit often to learn the risks and rewards of Art...
Understanding & Treating Traumatic Impact

Understanding & Treating Traumatic Impact

Trauma is sneaky, and has many faces that can span generations. It disguises itself as addiction, anxiety and phobias, failed marriages and relationships, chronic pain, emotional outbursts, and broken dreams. Unrecognized, it hurts our children and destroys our families and communities. It can cause us to behave in ways that are opposite our desires, leaving us clueless to solutions. Yet no matter how much we might want to change, we are a slave to the fear in our bodies. When the body says “NO!” it’s no. What might it be like if you could live your life based on your desires instead of your...

Training Vs Therapy

You want more out of life. You want to leave a legacy… something bigger than yourself. But there are obstacles between you and your dreams. You’ve worked your tail off and have little to show for it. You’re stuck in patterns of sabotage, indecision, and procrastination. But you weren’t born this way. You learned it. And with the right kind of training, you will unlearn it. I don’t treat problems. I train people. It’s all about optimizing your brain. Who wouldn’t want their brain optimized? By working in ways that involve the way your brain functions, you can bring about permanent, seemingly effortless change that you can pass down for generations. Remember… the problem is never the problem. Chronic avoidance of the problem is the...
